About the Good Childhood Index
Works For All are working on behalf of The Children's Society to understand more about young people's wellbeing. Every year, The Children's Society does research on this topic. As part of this research, they ask young people to complete a short questionnaire that asks them how they feel about different areas of their life. This is called The Good Childhood Index. If you like, you can read more about the Good Childhood Index.
The Good Childhood Index was developed by The Children’s Society in 2010. Since then, the world has changed and The Children’s Society want to make sure that it asks about the things that are most important to young people now. To do this, we would like to work with young people like you to design the project and think about how best to speak to other young people about wellbeing.
How the Project Works
January 2026
Young researchers join Emerging Voices in Research, meeting for introduction sessions and training. Group Members (13-17) and Group Leaders (18-24) begin working together to understand the current Good Childhood Index and identify what may have changed in children and young people's lives since it was first developed.
February - October 2026
Online sessions where the Emerging Voices in Research Group design the project, decide how to speak to other young people about wellbeing, create research materials, and conduct research with their peers. Group Leaders mentor younger members while everyone contributes their unique perspectives.
Beyond October 2026
Young people's voices shape the future of the Good Childhood Index and influence how we measure childhood wellbeing for years to come.
